Ugh, I hate writing ‘About Me’ pages. It’s the whole “Hi! I’m Gen! Let me spend the next few paragraphs telling you about how fabulous I am!” that really grates my cheese. Really, all I want to say is, “Hi, I’m Gen! Let’s be friends. And get to know each other. But in a gentle, introverted kind of way wherein by this time next year, we’ll know each other’s quirks and understand each other’s sense of humour and recommend to each other books that we love. Maybe we’ll know all of that, but we might not even know each others last name, or how old we are, or where we went to school. But we’ll be bookish and nerdy and happy.”
Is that too much to ask?
Or perhaps you need a little more to go on, before you enter the fray?
Maybe something like telling you that I love books and I love writing. Which is lucky really, otherwise what would I do with all the characters that pop into my noggin? Often, a new friend will claim squatters rights in my head until my resolve breaks and I write their story. Some days they fill me with inspiration. And other days I feel like I’m being held hostage. In both instances, writing is my tonic.
What else? Oh yes… My favourite word du jour is ‘fiddlesticks’. I say it ALL THE TIME. Which I have to add – is Colin’s fault. Colin is a character in one of my WIPs. He says it all the time, and well, it sort of rubbed off on me.
My favourite books are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t try and invoke each of these incredible authors’ styles into my writing, but I’d like to think that I’ve finally found my own Gen-style… Finding my voice was one of the most significant points in my writing journey, and I have posted more about it here.
My ultimate writing dream is for a kid to dress up as one of my characters on World Book day. That would be the cherry on the top of the icing on the cake for me. Yes, I’ve got a long way to go until that dream may be realised. I imagine there will be hard work with highs and lows on the horizon. If you think this writing gig is easy, you’re banoodles! But I’ll tell you one thing for nothing, I’m tickled pink to have you along for the ride!
Happy Reading and Writing, Friends.x
